Sarah was born on August 22nd, 1989 to George and Laurie Porter of Hockinson, Washington. She has three siblings; an older sister named Georgia and a younger brother and sister who are twins. She attended Hockinson High School where she and her sister Shannon discovered a love and talent for long distance running. In 2005, Sarah and Shannon placed 1st and 2nd respectively at the Washington class 2A State Cross Country Championship. Sarah graduated HHS and left for Western Washington University in 2007 while Shannon continued a stellar high school career, breaking the 2A state record with a 10:44 3200 meter personal best. While at Western Washington University, Sarah rewrote the record books claiming new marks in the indoor 1,500, mile, DMR, 3,000 and 5,000 and in the outdoor 1,500, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000. She was also the Division Two National Cross Country runner-up in 2009 and 2010 and was the NCAA D II Champion in the 10,000 in 2011, breaking a 24 year old national meet record in the process. Two weeks later, at the USA Outdoor Championship meet, Sarah broke the Division Two all-time record with a clocking of 32:57; a time that was also fast enough to give her the number one collegiate ranking for women in any NCAA division in 2011. In the fall of 2011, Sarah moved with Fiance Michael Crouch to Blowing Rock, North Carolina to join Professional Running Group ZAP Fitness (Michael Crouch is also a professional runner and was a 3-time Division II National Champion in the 1,500, indoor 5k and Cross Country). Sarah and Michael were married in the fall of 2012 and continue to train and race as a part of ZAP Fitness. Since moving to ZAP in 2011, Sarah has set personal records in every event.
